Approximately 10 hours onsite and 10 to 15 hours of preparation weekly.
Hope is a healthy, well-programmed, upper middle-class mid-sized congregation of young children through senior adults in a newly renovated and expanded building in the growing suburban community of Freehold Township. We are seeking a Minister of Music to help us worship God vibrantly and joyfully by serving as organist/choir director and lead senior and youth choirs. We have a 2 manual 5 ½ rank Peragallo pipe organ built in 1992 and have recently sought proposals to expand the organ. We have a Rogers electric piano with MIDI and a Yamaha sanctuary piano as well as three octaves of handchimes. We use all-inclusive worship bulletins with Evangelical Lutheran Worship or Marty Haugen liturgies for weekly Communion at 2 Sunday services during the school year at 8:30 and 10:45 AM and one at 9:30 AM during the summer, plus holiday and special services and Wednesday night Lenten Services at 7:30 PM. Our Saturday 5:30 PM Communion Service, handchime choir and Sunday School music program have not been the responsibility of the Minister of Music, but could be negotiable. St. James’ Church
300 Broadway
Long Branch, NJ 07740
Long Branch is a beach town in Monmouth County; the town provides a complete spectrum of ethnic and economic diversity, as does St. James’.
St. James’ is a high Anglo-Catholic parish in Long Branch, i.e., inclusive language is not permitted. A typical choral Mass at 10:00 a.m. attendance is 40 +, making this a level 2 church in the diocese. The current sanctuary was dedicated in 1913; it is a large, stone space with high ceilings, very complimentary acoustics and beautiful art work. The church uses The Hymnal 1982 and Lift Every Voice and Sing II.
The organ was rebuilt by Peragallo Pipe Organ Company of Paterson, NJ., in 1994. It is a three manual, 35-rank instrument originally built by Miller and Able of NY. For many years the adult choir of St. James’ consisted of a hired-in quartet. The previous rector and the new rector, Mother Valerie Redpath, are in favor of parishioners being involved in the choir. There have been 2 or 3 parishioners joining the paid quartet annually. This past year 2 of the paid quartet were graduate students at Westminster Choir College of Rider University. There has also been a youth choir for students in middle and high school. Presently there are 8 singers in these grades; however, as they become more involved in high school activities it becomes much more difficult to keep them. The good news is a new cluster of 1st and 2nd graders in the Sunday school that can become a nucleus for another youth choir. Candidates must have experience in the Episcopal (and hopefully Anglo-Catholic) liturgies.
You will lead the services on the organ and as cantor. There is a weekly meeting with the rector to choose hymns and service music, and there are weekly choir rehearsals. The tradition has been Wednesday evenings—Youth Choir at 6:30, Adult Choir at 7:30. Being high Anglo-Catholic, there are services on Christmas eve and Christmas morning, Holy Week evenings, All Saints evening, Ascension evening, and Ash Wednesday evening. The choir season usually runs from the Sunday after Labor Day to Trinity Sunday. The only other major event is the annual St. James’ Day Service, this year on July 20th.
Salary is $15,000. Weddings and funerals are additional, currently $200 and $150, respectively.
Please send materials to administrator@stjames-longbranch.org or the above address.
